A magnificent romantic Seventeenth Century estate and residence in the heart of the Dordogne

La Forge Neuve

The Chartreuse, considered locally to be the most important building of its kind in the whole of the Perigord region, sits in its own 184 acre wooded valley with a separate impressive house "La Petite Forge", three guest cottages, guardians house, gymnasium, original forge furnaces, large machinery store, lake, swimming pool and outbuildings.

According to the archives of the region this chartreuse dates to around 1680 originally built as a gentleman's hunting lodge. Owned in 1701 by Le Marquis de Fleurac, Seigneur de Roufflgnac, it became an ironmasters workshop around 1730 and at one time was manufacturing cannon for Napoleons army.

The lake abutting the Forge is a reservoir created to provide the ironworks with a reliable reserve of water. At the end of the 19th Century La Forge had ceased to manufacture iron and by 1900 it had become a plum canning factory, the orchards still exist at the top of the hill behind the "Petite Forge". The factory closed in around 1980, it was then left empty for 15 years until acquired and restored by the previous owners who ran it as a Chambres d'Hote for a number of years.

This programme of improvement has been carried on by the present owners and has resulted in the Forge being returned to its former glory with many original features including stone/marble fire surrounds and elegant panelling. Accommodation for maximum 30 guests.
